Confessions of a GLP Dealer: Volume 5: The Scale Can Lie

One of the hardest conversations I have with people on a weight loss journey is explaining that losing weight and becoming healthier are not always the same thing. The scale only tells you how much you weigh. It doesn’t tell you what you lost to get there.
Imagine two people who each lose 30 pounds. One loses mostly body fat while preserving muscle, gets stronger, has more energy, and maintains a healthier metabolism. The other loses a significant amount of muscle along with the fat, becomes weaker, and slows their metabolism. Both people see the exact same number on the scale, but they end up in two very different places.
That’s why I’ve become such a believer in looking beyond the number. Muscle matters. Strength matters. Energy matters. Body composition matters. Those things tell a much more complete story than the bathroom scale ever will.
Research continues to reinforce the importance of preserving lean muscle during weight loss. That’s why I encourage resistance training, adequate protein, and monitoring body composition throughout the journey. It’s not about making weight loss slower—it’s about making it healthier.
At the end of the day, I don’t want people to become smaller. I want them to become healthier.
Those aren’t always the same thing.
The goal isn’t simply to weigh less. The goal is to lose fat while preserving the strongest, healthiest version of yourself. That’s a goal worth chasing.
(This is Volume 5 of my weekly series, Confessions of a GLP Dealer, where I share honest lessons I’ve learned about weight loss, health, and long-term success.)
