Distance running is hard; life is harder

My non-running friends and family frequently ask me “how do you run that far?” I pondered this question during my 31 mile run Saturday. The answer is simple: life is harder. I am simply executing a training plan with a high degree of effort and discipline. In other words, it’s nothing special. You could do this. Discipline must be built, it doesn’t occur overnight. But once you build the discipline to do difficult things, its easier to inject discipline into other areas of your life. You will be able to say, “I am going to read the Bible every day” And you just do it. I want to strengthen my relationship with me daughter so I’ve increased the frequency of our daddy/daughter dates for 2021. And I just get it done. The old version of myself frequently spoke of priorities that were rarely executed. Luckily, the old guy hasn’t existed for a long time. The discipline trickles down to everything in your life, such as work, marriage, etc. Nothing really gets better until you put in the effort and we are less likely to prioritize without discipline. Those without discipline let excuses kick in—I know all about those. But remember, life is hard. Its hard for everyone, no one gets an “easy” life. Discipline leads to freedom; freedom leads to joy. Go get it.
