I Believed My Excuses; Do You Believe Yours? Stop It!

Anyone can do this, I didn’t do anything special. You can do this. The formula isn’t complicated. Home-based workouts and healthy food resources are easily accessible now more than ever. There is only one thing I had to overcome to do this: me. That’s it. We get in our own way and choose the path of least resistance. We choose immediate gratification over long term wellness. We manufacture our own excuses to justify inaction. Sadly, many people regret that inaction later on when experiencing health problems and/or poor quality of life. The guy on the left claimed to be just “slightly overweight”. That was another lie I told myself. The guy on the left was “too busy”. The guy on the left had time for bars, excessive sports watching and TV, but no time for self care. The guy on the left didn’t think he ate “too bad” because he occasionally “diets” a few times a year. And he could have been eating “much worse”. I told myself lies while choosing comfort. The guy on the left used “eventually” and “next Monday” to punt today’s responsibilities each week. The guy on the left thought he would never be capable of being fit, while hoping to one day just “get in better shape”. And check this out, the guy on the left gained 25 more pounds than shown in this picture. If we want to make changes we must first ask ourself, “what are my excuses?” I recommend writing them down, one sentence at a time. Insert the word “despite” at the front of every sentence. Write a phrase at the end of each session to counter your excuse.

Despite “lack of time”, I will cut an hour of wasted time each day to exercise.

Despite believing “healthy food is expensive”, I am going research how to build a healthy grocery list within my budget.

Despite “not having time to cook dinner”, I will block 2 hours on the weekend for healthy meal prep.

Despite “my back injury”, I will find workouts I am physically capable of doing today.

What are your excuses? What do you tell yourself?
