My Top 10 Rules for Food Choices
FOOD! It is a conversation that comes up at least 5 times a week with people I encounter. I don’t believe in diets; I believe in lifestyle choices. I have not counted calories or carbs in over 5 years. I believe my food choices are simpler than any “diet” out there. So simple I made it into a top 10:
1. Primarily eat food directly from animals or plants.
2. Little to no gluten.
3. Little to no dairy (limited amount of cheese and butter; replace milk with almond milk)
4. Avoid fake sweeteners. They will make you crave more sweets.
5. No processed foods.
6. Limit alcohol intake to less than an average of 1 per day.
7. Replace potatoes with sweet potatoes or parsnips
8. 85/15% rule while buying groceries (85% of items from the perimeter–the produce and meat sections; 15% in the aisles).
9. Avoid anything with more than 9 ingredients or words you cannot pronounce.
10. After earning it first, reward yourself by occasionally breaking the first 9 rules.
I’m not a dietician or doctor, but my annual labs are all in healthy ranges each year. My lab results 11 years ago said I was a ticking time bomb. I am 47 and haven’t needed a prescription in 4 years. Your results may vary. But at the very least, you will be eating a lot better than you probably are now.
Hollar if you have any questions.
I wrote about my food selections last year in a blog post. I breakdown the specific foods I eat, including 27 pictures of actual simple-ingredient meals: http://injuredbeast.com/2021/09/food-selections-made-easy
