Weight Loss Wednesday – Volume 5: Stop Trying to Change Everything

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to overhaul their entire life on Monday morning.

They throw out all the junk food, buy a month’s worth of groceries they’ve never eaten, sign up for a gym membership, promise themselves they’ll work out six days a week, and swear off sugar forever. By Thursday, they’re exhausted. By the following Monday, they’re right back where they started.

I don’t think weight loss usually fails because people don’t want it badly enough. I think it fails because they try to change too much, too fast.

When I started losing weight, I wasn’t thinking about losing 92 pounds. I was thinking about making one better decision than I made yesterday, then doing it again the next day.

Those small decisions don’t seem like much in the moment. Choosing water instead of soda. Taking a walk after dinner. Cooking at home instead of hitting the drive-thru. Going to bed a little earlier so you’re rested enough to make better decisions tomorrow.

Individually, none of those choices will change your life overnight. Repeated hundreds of times, they’ll change your life completely.

People overestimate what they can accomplish in a week and underestimate what they can accomplish in a year.

Don’t focus on changing everything today. Focus on making one decision that tomorrow’s version of you will be thankful for, then wake up and do it again.
